    PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) and the U.S. National Junior Team open play at the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship on Thursday, Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden with an 11:30 a.m. (ET) game against Czech Republic.  

    The United States is in a group with Czech Republic, Canada, Germany and Slovakia. The games will be televised live on the NHL Network (DirecTV 215, DISH 477) and streamed live via  

    After a training camp and two exhibition games against Minnesota State, Team USA played a pair of pre-tournament games in Sweden. In the second game (Dec. 22), Gillies led Team USA to a 3-2 win over Finland by making 38 saves. He was named the United States’ Player of the Game.

    Last season, Gillies served as the primary backup for Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia and became the first Friar to take home a medal in the prestigious tournament as the U.S. won gold.

    Last season, Gillies became the 11th Friar to take part in the World Junior Championships and the first since Bobby Goepfert (2003). Shaun Kane ’92 is the only other Friar to have taken part in two Junior World Championships (1989 & 1990).
