WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
After leading the fifth-ranked Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-1 win at Army on Friday night (Dec. 20), freshman goaltender Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.) was named the Hockey East Association's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week (Dec. 23).
Ellis made 19 saves to help the Friars (12-2-3, 6-2-0) extend their current unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2). Fifteen of Ellis' 19 saves came in the first two periods of play, when the game was either tied 0-0 or Providence held a 1-0 lead. He finished the game with a 1.00 goals against average and a .950 save percentage.
It was the second start of Ellis' Friar career (third appearance) and he improved to 2-1-0 on the season with the victory. He is the second Friar to be named a Hockey East Rookie of the Week this season, joining Niko Rufo (Stoneham, Mass.).
The Friars return to the ice on Sunday, Dec. 29 and Monday Dec. 30 when they take part in Dartmouth's 2013 Ledyard Classic Tournament. Providence will play the hosts from Dartmouth in a 7:00 p.m. game on Sunday and then play either Air Force or Northeastern on Monday. It will be the fourth all-time appearance by the Friars in Dartmouth's annual holiday tournament.
