PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- - Providence College men's hockey defenseman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, December 15. It marks the first time in his career that Taormina has earned the league's defensive player of the week honors.

Taormina helped the Friars to a 4-3 win over at Brown on Tuesday, December 9 in the 23rd Annual Mayor's Cup played at Meehan Auditorium. He recorded three assists, including one on the game winner. The three assists matched a career best. Taormina is second on the team in scoring with 11 points (three goals, eight assists).

The Friars will return to action on January 10, 2009 when they host UMass Lowell at Schneider Arena.
