USA Hockey Release | Complete Prelim Roster (PDF)
USA Hockey released the preliminary roster for its 2013 U.S. National Junior Team on Tuesday, Dec. 4 and it includes men's hockey freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine).
Gillies was one of the three goalies named to the team and one of three Hockey East players who made the squad, joining Boston University defenseman Matt Grzelcyk and Boston College forward John Gaudreau.
Gillies and the rest of the players named to that preliminary roster will participate in a training camp, Dec. 16-18, at the New York Rangers' Madison Square Garden Training Center in Tarrytown, N.Y. The camp will then move to Helsinki, Finland, from Dec. 19-23. The final 23-player U.S. National Junior Team roster will be announced by USA Hockey on Dec. 23.
Gillies has started each of Providence's 14 games this season, posting a 7-6-1 record to go along with a 1.88 goals against average and a .930 save percentage. His goals against average ranks 11th the country and third in Hockey East, while his save percentage is 19th in the nation and fourth in Hockey East.
For his strong play, Gillies has been honored often by Hockey East. He was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week twice (Oct. 15 & Nov. 26), the Rookie of the Week twice (Oct. 22 & 29), and the Rookie of the Month for October. He has posted shutouts over Maine (3-0 on Oct. 27) and Brown (7-0 on Nov. 24) to become the first Friar freshman with two shutouts since Chris Terreri did so in 1982-83. In the Mayor's Cup victory over Brown, Gillies posted a career-high 35 saves.
Prior to his arrival at Providence College, Gillies spent the last two seasons playing for the Indianapolis Ice of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He was selected by the Calgary Flames in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft (75th overall).
The players who make the final 23-man roster on Dec. 23 will comprise the U.S. National Junior Team, which will play in the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, Dec. 26, 2012-Jan. 5, 2013. The United States is in a group with Canada, Germany, Russia and Slovakia.
Gillies and the Friars are back in action this Friday night as they play host to second-ranked Boston College at Schneider Arena. The sold out game, which will start at 7:05 p.m., will be televised live locally on Cox Sports on OSN.
