WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Association's Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Gillies stopped 58 of the 60 shots he faced in a 1-1-0 week for the Friars and earned his second shutout of the season with a career-high 35 saves against Brown in the 27th annual Mayor's Cup.
Gillies started the week by making 23 saves against 18th-ranked Quinnipiac on Tuesday, Nov. 20 in the Friars' 2-0 loss. Then on Saturday, Nov. 24, Gillies stopped all 35 shots he faced to post his second shutout of the season as the Friars claimed the Mayor's Cup with a 7-0 win at Brown. He finished the week with a 1.00 goals against average and a .967 save percentage.
Saturday marked the first ever shutout by a Providence goalie at Brown's Meehan Auditorium and Gillies became the first Friar goalie to make at least 35 saves in a game since Feb. 12, 2011 (when Alex Beaudry posted 42 saves in a 3-3 tie at UMass). Gillies joins Tyler Sims '08 as the only Friar goalies to post a shutout in the Mayor's Cup (Sims blanked Brown on Jan. 4, 2007 in an 8-0 Friar win).
It marks Gillies' second Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor (Oct. 15) and his fourth Hockey East weekly honor of the season (named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29).
Gillies and the Friars return to Hockey East play with a home-and-home series this weekend versus rival Merrimack. On Friday, Nov. 30, Providence plays at 7:30 p.m. in North Andover, Mass. Then on Saturday, Dec. 1, Providence welcomes the Warriors to Schneider Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game.
