WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Junior forward Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) was named the Hockey East Association's Athletic Republic Co-Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Army led the Friars to a 6-2 win over Northeastern on Friday night with his first career hat trick.
Against the Huskies, Army scored his first of the game at 2:51 of the second period. That goal eventually proved to be the game winner. Army then added two goals in the third as the Friars built a 6-0 lead en route to the victory. With four goals, Army is now tied for the team lead. He has played in all 10 games for the Friars this season.
In addition to becoming the first Hockey East player to register a hat trick this season, Army was the first Friar to score three goals in a game since Nov. 4, 2011 when Tim Schaller netted three goals against Vermont in a 5-2 Friar victory. It marked the 12th Friar hat trick since the 2000-01 season.
Army is the first Friar to earn Hockey East Player of the Week honors this season. Schaller was the last Providence player to earn the honor (Feb. 13, 2012).
Army and the Friars are back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 20 for a 7:00 p.m. home game against Quinnipiac.
