Nov. 1, 2012
WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Men's hockey freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Association's Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Month for October. Gillies helped lead the Friars to a 3-2-1 record in October and posted a 1.72 goals against average and a .938 save percentage to go along with 150 saves in 347:59 of work.
Gillies started all six of the Friars' games in October and played all but the final period of Providence's 8-2 season-opening win over Sacred Heart (Oct. 12). Gillies did stop all 14 shots he faced in that game to earn his first career victory. Other October highlights included making 27 saves at then fourth-ranked Miami on Oct. 19 in a 1-1 overtime tie. Gillies also helped lead the Friars to a weekend sweep of Maine (Oct. 26 and 27), stopping 53 of the 55 shots he faced. In the series finale against the Black Bears, Gillies stopped all 26 shots he faced to earn his first career shutout.
Gillies was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week twice (Oct. 22 & 29) and also earned Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors (Oct. 15). He leads Hockey East in goals against average (1.72) and ranks second in save percentage (.938). His goals against average ranks 14th nationally, while his save percentage ranks 16th.
Gillies and the Friars travel to Hockey East foe Vermont this weekend for a two-game series on Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3. Puck drop is scheduled at 7:05 for both games.
