WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Men’s hockey freshman goalie Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Gillies made his collegiate debut for the Friars on Friday night and stopped all 14 shots he faced in two periods of play in Providence’s 8-2 home-opening win over Sacred Heart. The following night, Gillies made 30 saves in Providence’s 4-2 loss at No. 12/14 Boston University, which scored its final goal on an empty net. Gillies was named the game’s third star for his efforts versus the Terriers. On the weekend, Gillies posted a 1.80 goals against average, a .936 save percentage and made 44 saves.
Gillies, a product of the Indiana Ice of the USHL, is Providence’s first Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week since Alex Beaudry earned the honor on Dec. 5, 2012.
