PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College sophomore defenseman Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, which was held on June 22-23 in Toronto, Ontario. Lundberg was drafted in the third round by the Colorado Avalanche. He was the 94th overall selection. By being drafted 94th overall in the third round, it marked the highest any PC player has been taken in the NHL Entry Draft since Joe Hulbig was a first round selection (13th overall) in 1992. He is the 13th PC player to be drafted in the top three rounds of the NHL Entry Draft.

Lundberg, a 6-foot-3-inch, 200-pound defenseman played in 36 games and recorded nine assists last season for the Friars. Prior to playing at Providence, Lundberg was a standout defenseman with the New England Coyotes of the EJHL (1999-01). With the Coyotes, Lundberg was a two-time Defenseman of the Year and a two-time EJHL All-Star.

One of Providence's eight incoming freshmen also was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. However, due to NCAA restrictions incoming freshmen are not eligible to be listed in this release.

Overall, 74 college or college bound players were selected in the nine rounds of the Draft. PC now has six members of its 2002-03 team drafted by NHL squads.
