Three Future Men's Hockey Players Selected on Day Two of the 2018 NHL Draft

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three future members the Providence College men’s hockey program were selected on day two of the 2018 NHL Draft held at the American Airlines Center on Saturday (June 23) in Dallas, Texas. Incoming freshmen Mikael Hakkarainen (Chicago, No. 139) and Michael Callahan (Arizona, No. 142) were both selected in the fifth round, while 2019-20 commit Jake Kucharski (Carolina, No. 197) was selected in the seventh round.

Hakkarainen (Espoo, Finland), a 6-foot-1-inch, 194-pound forward, totaled 46 points in 36 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL last season. Hakkarainen ranked eighth in the USHL in points per game (1.28), finished the season with 15 goals and 31 assists. The Espoo, Finland native registered 16 multi-point games last season with Muskegon.

Callahan (Franklin, Mass.), a 6-foot-2-inch, 197-pound defenseman, was ranked 145th among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings after posting three goals and 15 assists in 59 games between Central Illinois and Youngstown of the USHL. He was a USHL All-Rookie Team selection in 2017-18 and participated in the 2017 CCM All-American Prospects Game and NHL Combine. Callahan also tallied a goal in the 2018 USHL Top Prospects Game this past January.

Kucharski (Eria, Pa.), a 6-foot-4-inch, 215-pound goaltender, was ranked 21st among North American goaltenders entering this weekend’s draft. Kucharski appeared in 26 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL and posted a 3.56 GAA and .881 save percentage. He also appeared in the 2017 CCM All-American Prospects Game and is the first Friar to be drafted by the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes franchise.

In total, four Friars were selected in this weekend's draft after incoming freshman Jay O'Brien was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 19th overall pick in the first round on Friday night.
