PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Assistant Vice President for Athletics John Marinatto and Head Hockey Coach Paul Pooley today announced the appointment of David Berard as assistant hockey coach at the College. Berard replaces Dave Peters who resigned in May to become the head coach and general manager for the Danville (Ill.) Wings of the North American Hockey League.

Berard had been an assistant coach at Lake Superior State University for the past two seasons. While at Lake State he was responsible for the team's recruiting and working with the goaltenders, forwards and penalty killing units. He also handled NCAA compliance and eligibility issues for the Lakers.

A native West Warwick, R.I. and a 1988 graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School, Berard is very familiar with Providence College Hockey. He attended PC and spent four seasons as a goaltender for the Friars. After spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Berard returned to Providence College in 1994 where he worked for two seasons as an assistant coach under Paul Pooley.

"We are very excited to have David back at PC," Pooley said. "In addition to being the most qualified candidate, he's familiar with the school, the program, the system and has a passion for success. David gained valuable experience the last two years while working at Lake Superior."

The 28-year-old Berard is engaged to former PC field hockey player Lynne Campbell. The two will be married in June.
