Three Men's Hockey Players Named To Hockey East All-Academic Team
June 16, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Three players on the Providence College men's hockey team were named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team on June 13. Senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.), senior defenseman Shawn Weiman (Marshall, Sask.) and freshman forward Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) all earned academic honors. To qualify for the All-Academic Team, a player must earn a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two academic periods during which he was actively competing. Schaefer, an art major, who earned a 3.6 combined grade point average over the last two academic periods, was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year. A 2001 Second-Team All American, Schaefer finished his career at Providence with records of 2,848 saves and a 2.98 goals against average. In addition, he also was named to the Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star Team in 2003 and earned the team's Best Defensive Player of the Year Award as well as the Academic Award for the last two seasons. This season, he finished the with a 13-8-2 record, a 2.96 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. Weiman earned a 3.2 combined GPA in social science. He was a steady defenseman for the Friars last season, playing in 34 games and registering two goals, five assists for seven points.
Meyers, an education major, also had a 3.2 combined GPA. Meyers saw action in 18 games in his rookie season with the Friars. He recorded two goals and three assists for five points.
