PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Seven Providence College men's hockey players were named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team on Friday, June 6. Seniors Trevor Ludwig (Grapevine, Texas), Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.), juniors Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) and Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) as well as freshmen Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) and Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) each earned Hockey East All-Academic Team honors. To qualify for the all-academic team, a player must earn a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two academic periods during which he was actively competing.

Laughlin, a philosophy major, has been named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team for the third consecutive season and he has earned the top GPA on the team during that span. This season, Laughlin earned a 3.77 GPA. As a co-captain of the 2007-08 squad, Laughlin played in all 36 games and posted 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists).

For Ludwig and Rheault, it marks the second consecutive season that they each earned All-Academic honors. Ludwig, who recently earned his bachelor's degree in management, had a 3.46 grade point average during the 2007-08 season. He also played in 29 games this season and recorded four points (one goal, three assists). Rheault, who also received a bachelor's degree in management, had the second highest GPA this past season as he garnered a 3.59 GPA. He led the team in scoring with a career high 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) and was tabbed as an All-Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star.

 

 

Sims, who just recently graduated, has earned the honor three times. A double major in economics and history, Sims finished with a 3.39 GPA this past season. He played in 32 games as a goalie and recorded a 2.53 goals against average to go along with a .907 save percentage.

Mazzolini joins the All-Academic for the first time in his career. The marketing major earned 3.41 GPA during the past season. He played in 32 games and recorded 16 points (seven goals, nine assists).

Germain and MacKinnon round out the list of honorees. Germain had the third highest GPA (3.54) on the team. He played in all 36 games in his first season and tallied one goal and nine assists for 10 points. MacKinnon recorded a 3.35 GPA in his first season. He also played in all 36 games and posted 10 points on five goals and five assists.
