PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College hockey coach Tim Army announced on Friday, May 16 that student athletes Bryce Aneloski (Pekin, Ill.), Shawn Tingley (North Kingstown, R.I.), Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.), David Brown (Centennial, Colo.), and Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) each have committed to attend PC beginning in September 2008. Aneloski, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound defenseman, played for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In 59 games, Aneloski tallied 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) and was voted the team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2007-08. In addition, he was ranked in the 2008 NHL Central Scouting final draft list. Tingley, a local product from North Kingstown, will join the Friars after playing for the South Shore Kings of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). The 6-foot-1, 180-pound forward played in 44 games last season and recorded 17 goals and 41 assists for 58 points. As an assistant captain last season, Tingley, who is a 2006 graduate of LaSalle Academy, finished tied for first in the EJHL in assists (41) and tied for fourth in points (58). He also was selected to play in the EJHL All-Star game. Bergland is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound left wing who played at Benilde St. Margaret's School in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). Bergland led Benilde St. Margaret's in scoring with 70 points (38 goals, 32 assists) and was named to the Pioneer Press All-State Second Team and the Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention Team. In addition, during the 2007-08 season he led his team to a third place finish in the MSHSL Tournament Class AA, the squad's highest finish ever in Class AA.
Brown is the third member of the 2012 class who played hockey for the MSHSL. Brown, who played at Cloquet High School, is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman. In 30 games last season, Brown totaled 36 points on 18 goals and 18 assists. As a captain last season, he was selected to the Pioneer Press and the Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention teams. He also garnered Duluth News Tribune All-Area First Team honors and Lake Superior Conference First Team accolades. Brown, who led Cloquet to the MSHSL Class AA Tournament, was selected as the most valuable defenseman at the Chicago Showcase in 2008.
Balysky comes to Providence College after playing for Taft School of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (NEPSIHA). Balysky is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound left wing, who captained Taft School during the 2007-08 season. He recorded 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists in 23 games last season. In addition, he was named to the Founders League All-Star Team. The Friars will now have nine total student-athletes who will join the 2008-09 team. On January 23, Robert Maloney (Eagan, Minn.), Chad Johnson (Lynn, Mass.), Danny New (White Plains, N.Y.) each signed a National Letter of Intent, while Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) also committed to attend PC. "This group of student-athletes will add a great deal of speed, skill and depth to our lineup," head coach Tim Army said. "As we continue to mature as a program, this incoming freshman class will complement our returning players and further enhance our puck pursuit and our puck possession style of play. In addition, they will excel as student-athletes at Providence College."
