Friars Honor their Own at Team Banquet

PROVIDENCE, RI -- Seven Providence College hockey players were honored at the team's annual end-of-the-season banquet on Friday, April17 at the Providence Marriott. Freshman goaltender Boyd Ballard of Weyburn, Saskatchewan received the Lamoriello Award, which is given to the team's most valuable player. Ballard also earned the Reverend Herman Schneider Award as the team's most valuable freshman. He finished the season with a 12-12-1 record, one shutout, a 3.48 goals against average and a .894 save percentage. Sophomore left wing Fernando Pisani of Edmonton, Alberta and sophomore defenseman Josh MacNevin of West Lethbridge, Alberta received the team's Plus/Minus Award after each posted a plus/minus rating of +13. Junior right wing Jon Cameron of Langley, British Columbia earned the Thomas Eccleston, Jr. Award as the squad's unsung hero. In 36 games, Cameron tallied 10 goals and 18 assists. He finished third on the team in scoring (28 points) and tied for first in power-play goals (four) and short-handed goals (one). Junior left wing Troy Lake of Edmonton, Alberta and sophomore defenseman Leigh Dean of Denville, N.J. received the Friar Award, which is given annually to the team's top defensive players. Lake finished the season with 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points, while Dean contributed with seven assists. Sophomore defenseman Dave Gunderson of Duluth, Minnesota received the team's Academic Award. Gunderson, who has a 3.68 grade point average, earned the award with the team's highest GPA. Gunderson registered one goal and two assists during the season. PC finished the season in seventh place in HOCKEY EAST with a 9-13-2 record and a 15-18-3 mark overall.
