Men's Hockey Announces 2003 Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team announced its annual team awards on Friday, April 15 at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, R.I. at the team's 2002-03 Awards Banquet. Senior right wing Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) received the Louis Lamoriello Award, which is given to the team's most valuable player, and the Friar Award, which is given by the Providence coaches who they feel has done the little things that do not appear on the statistics. It marks the second consecutive season that DiSalvatore has won the Lamoriello Award. DiSalvatore led the Friars in scoring with career-highs of 19 goals, 29 assists and 48 points in 36 games. In addition, the 6-foot-1 co-captain led the team with seven power-play tallies and two short-handed goals. He finished his career ranked 18th all-time in scoring at Providence with 142 points (59 goals, 83 assists). Senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) earned the team's Ron Wilson Defensive Player Award and the Academic Award. Schaefer posted a 13-8-2 record, a 2.96 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He earned HOCKEY EAST Honorable Mention All-Star accolades and concluded his career ranked first in the Friars' career saves list with 2,848 stops and first with a 2.98 goals against average. A drawing major, Schaefer also earned the team's highest grade point average. Junior right wing Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) was given the Thomas Eccleston, Jr. Award as the team's unsung hero. Goodwin more than doubled his output from his first two seasons at Providence, tallying a career-high 17 points (four goals, 13 assists). He finished seventh on the team in scoring. Junior defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) earned the team's Plus/Minus Award as he led the team with a plus/minus rating of +21. Wood, who was named HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month for February, earned Second-Team All HOCKEY EAST honors. He finished fourth on the team in scoring with career-highs of nine goals, 20 assists and 29 points. Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) received the Reverend Herman Schneider Award, which is given to the most valuable freshman. Goepfert started 13 games and posted a 6-6-1 record with a 2.39 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Goepfert took time off from the team in early January as he was selected to the U.S. Junior National Team, which competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Nova Scotia. The Friars finished the 2002-03 season with a 19-14-3 overall record and a 12-9-3 mark in HOCKEY EAST play, which was good for fourth place in the league.
