Frozen Four Pre-Championship Press Conference
April 7, 2000
HEAD COACH DEAN BLAIS:
Opening Comments:
"Certainly it will be a great skating game, all four teams here can skate with anyone in the country. One of our assets is our speed. Bryan Lundbohm got to the outside last night for the power play goal, then Spiewak broke to the outside for a short handed goal. BC has great talent and has three Hobey Baker finalists, while we have Jeff (Panzer) as our finalist. It feels great to be here."
ON CHANGE IN STYLE: "When I took over at North Dakota we had not won a game on Olympic size ice. We had a big strong team. In our conference St. Cloud, Minnesota and Alaska all built Olympic size rinks. I had to go out and recruit players who could skate and that made a big difference. For my first two seasons we did not win a game on the Olympic surface."
THOUGHTS ON TOMMOROW'S GAME: "It will be tough to get to the net. BC beat us last year in this tournament and were trying to avenge the loss. We are looking forward to BC and both teams can fore-check. We will try to get to the net and shoot the puck alot. Both teams' goalies are capable of getting a shutout." "We have to stay out of the box. Last night we were off our game with penalties, we were lucky to get away with two five-on-threes against a very good Maine team. Another key is to get to the net. Were going to have to score garbage goals. There aren't going to be a lot of pretty plays. Last night we made the best of our opportunities and we will continue to try to go outside."
THOUGHTS ON GOEHRING: "I was worried, he hadn't played in three weeks. But he has been as good as any goalie UND has ever had. He is capable of putting up a zero. Karl is the winningest goalie in UND history and it says a lot about him as a person. He's learned to anticipate shots and has learned to deflect passes that come through the crease."
LEE GOREN:"It will be tough to hold BC to no goals. With Karl, though, anything is possible. I play with guys who are quick and get me the puck. I'm a guy who goes into the corners and stands in front of the net. Guys like Jeff and Ulmer get me the puck and I shoot, and goes in for me. I owe it to those guys."
PETER ARMBRUST:"The five seniors told the younger guys what the Championship was like and how exciting it was to be here. This late in the season we don't need to be giving a lot of pep talks. The young guys have carried us at some points of the season. Everyone is on the same page, hopefully they will get to experience what we experienced in 1997." "There are many similarities from the team of 1997, were a speed team, the same as we were back then. It's going to be a battle. Our two teams match-up well, they have a lot of firepower. It's like facing BU in the 1997 final. We are a young and hardworking and have a lot of overachievers."
JEFF PANZER:"Both teams have a lot of speed and the first two lines like to move the puck. Both teams want to play straight up."
