After helping the Friars to their first NCAA Tournament win since 1991, freshman defenseman Anthony Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Month on Wednesday afternoon (April 2).
Florentino and the Friars went 4-2-0 in the month of March and the freshman defenseman chipped in with two goals and an assist. His first goal of the month came in Providence's final regular season game at Maine on March 1. Florentino netted the game-winning, power-play tally in that 3-2 victory over Maine, which clinched a first round bye in the Hockey East playoffs and home ice for the quarterfinals.
Florentino also scored in Providence's 4-0 blanking of Quinnipiac in the NCAA Frist Round (March 28) for his first career playoff tally.
A two-time Hockey East Weekly Top Performer this season, the award marks Florentino's first career monthly Hockey East honor. He finished the season with five goals and six assists in 30 games. He also had a plus-12 plus/minus rating, the third-best rating on the team.
Making its first NCAA appearance since 2001, Providence advanced to the program's sixth NCAA East Regional Final/Quarterfinal appearance. The Friars (22-11-6) finished the season tied for the third-most wins in program history and were bidding for their first Frozen Four appearance since 1985.
