PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Senior men's ice hockey defenseman Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) signed with the Wheeling Nailers of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Velischek joins classmate Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) as recent additions to the Nailers roster.
The Friar duo made their professional debuts on Wednesday night in Wheeling's 6-2 win over the Elmira Jackals. Velischek and Rooney each had an assist in the win.
Velischek played in all 38 games for the Friars this season and recorded six assists. For his career, he played in 113 games, scoring two goals and adding 25 assists for 27 points. He finished the 2012-13 season with team-best +17 rating.
Rooney played in 14 games as a senior and scored two goals while adding five assists for seven points. He appeared in 97 games as a Friar, netting seven goals and 26 assists for 33 career points.
Most recently, Rooney assisted on Kevin Rooney's first career goal (his cousin), which was scored in the semifinals of the Hockey East Championship Tournament at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. Chris Rooney's other season highlights included scoring a goal and notching an assist at Boston College on March 2 in Providence's 5-1 win.
