Björkqvist, Hawkey Earn Final Hockey East Weekly Honors

March 26, 2018

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College's Kasper Björkqvist (Espoo, Finland) and Hayden Hawkey (Parker, Colo.) earned two of the Hockey East's final weekly honors for the 2017-18 on Monday (March 26). Björkqvist earned Hockey East Player of the Week accolades for the first time in his career while Hawkey earned his fourth Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.

Björkqvist capped off his sophomore season with goals in three of the team's final four postseason games, including the game-winning goal in the NCAA East Regional Semifinal against Clarkson last Friday and a goal against Notre Dame in the regional final on Saturday. His 16 goals were tied for the team lead alongside Erik Foley and his +14 rating was good for fourth on the team. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect tallied four game-winning goals in 2017-18.

Hawkey stopped 41-of-43 shots at the NCAA East Regional last weekend, recording a 1.00 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.  The 1-0 shutout over Clarkson last Friday was just the third shutout for the program in 34 NCAA Tournament games. The shutout also marked Hawkey's eighth of his career, which is good for second on the program's all-time shutout list. The Montreal Canadiens prospect posted a 1.62 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage in the team's final 22 games coming out of the winter break.
