Four Men's Hockey Players Earn League Honors
March 13, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Thursday, March 13 that Providence College junior defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) was named to the Hockey East All-Star Second Team. Seniors Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) and Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) as well as graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) earned Honorable Mention. Wood finished fourth on the team in scoring with career highs of nine goals, 20 assists for 29 points. He was named Hockey East Player of the Month for February as he led the Friars to a 6-0-2 mark in that stretch. He finished third among Hockey East defensemen with 29 points and led the Friars with a plus/minus rating of +21. DiSalvatore had his best season as Friar. He led the team in scoring with a career-high 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) and finished fourth in the league in overall scoring with 48 points. The 6-foot-1 draftee of the San Jose Sharks was first on the team with seven power-play goals and two short-handed tallies. Schaefer, also a draftee of the San Jose Sharks, led the Friars with 13-8-2 record, a .909 save percentage and a 2.96 goals against average. He earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors three times and earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors once. In addition, he also was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for February. Schaefer is the College's all-time leader in career saves with 2,848 stops. Fregoe finished second on the team with a career-high 44 points and was the Friars' leading goal scorer with a career-high 23 tallies. He was second in Hockey East games with 16 goals in league play and led PC with five game-winning goals, including four in league play.
