Men's Hockey Final Weekly Notes, 3/12
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (18-18-2, 10-13-1) HOCKEY FINAL NOTES:
FRIARS' SEASON ENDS WITH TWO LOSSES TO MAINE IN QUARTERFINALS... Providence's season came to end on March 10 after losing two games to sixth-ranked Maine in a best-of-three HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series in Orono, Maine. On March 9, Maine captured the first game of the series with a 5-3 win. Junior Matt Libby (Saco, Maine), senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) and freshman Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) all scored for PC. Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 34 saves in the loss. The following night, the Friars suffered a 5-4 overtime loss to the Black Bears. Freshman Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan), junior Heath Gordon (Pembroke, Mass.), senior Nick Lent (Westwood, Mass.) and sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) each scored for the Friars. Ballard made 39 saves in the season-ending loss.
PISANI ALL-TIME AT PROVIDENCE... Senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) finished his career at Providence on March 10 having played in 143 consecutive games for the Friars. He missed one game his entire collegiate career. Pisani finished the season second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 24 assists in 38 games. He concludes his career ranked 13th on the PC all-time scoring chart with 153 points (56 goals, 97 assists) in 147 games. He also ranks third all-time in games played (147) and eighth all-time in assists (97). Pisani recorded 40 multiple-point games in his career at Providence. He is a 1996 eighth-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers.
SHEPPARD FINISHES SEASON AS LEADING SCORER... Senior forward Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) finished the season as the Friars' leading scorer with 44 points (18 goals, 26 assists). He also led the team in goals (18), power-play goals (12) and assists (26). He recorded 12 multiple-point games in 1999-00 and 24 in his career. Sheppard ranks 33rd all-time in scoring at PC with 111 career points (50 goals, 61 assists). He was named HOCKEY EAST Player of the Month for November after recording 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in eight games. Sheppard earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week accolades after registering five points (three goals, two assists), including a hat trick, in PC's two wins against Northeastern on November 19-20.
BALLARD FINISHES THE SEASON STRONG... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 73 saves in PC's two losses to Maine in the HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinals on March 9-10. Ballard made 34 stops in the Friars' 5-3 loss to Maine on March 9 and 39 stops in PC's 5-4 overtime defeat on March 10. He finished the season making 32 or more stops in eight of the last nine games. For the season, Ballard posted 30 or more stops in 14 of his 27 games. He posted a 12-13-1 mark, a 3.02 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in 1999-00. Ballard ranks sixth all-time in saves (2,086) at PC and sixth all-time in games played (81). For his career at Providence, Ballard has posted a 38-37-3 record, a 3.38 goals against average and an .893 save percentage.
DiSALVATORE SCORES FOR FRIARS... Freshman Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) finished the season with eight points (three goals, five assists) in the last six games. For the season, DiSalvatore was second on the team in goals (15) and was fourth on the team in scoring (27 points). His 15 goals was the most by a Friar rookie since Craig Darby netted 17 tallies in 1991-92. He registered seven multiple-point game this season. On December 29-30, he tallied four goals, including two gamewinners, and helped the Friars capture the HSBC/RPI Tournament title in Troy, N.Y. with wins over Union (3-1) and sixth-ranked Rensselaer (5-3). For his efforts, DiSalvatore earned Tournament MVP honors and also was named HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week on January 3. In addition, DiSalvatore earned HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Month accolades for December after he scored six goals and notched one assist while helping PC post a 4-1 mark for the month.
RASK FINISHES STRONG FOR PC... Freshman Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) registered four points (one goal, three assists) in PC's two losses at Maine in the HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinals on March 9-10. On March 10, the rookie center registered his first collegiate three point game (one goal, two assists) in the Friars' 5-4 overtime loss to the Black Bears. The three-point effort was his fifth multiple-point game of the season. The previous night, Rask recorded one assist in PC's 5-3 loss to Maine. Rask finished the season as one of the hottest Friars with 11 points (five goals, six assists) in the last nine games. For season, he finished sixth on the team in scoring with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 38 games.
FREGOE THIRD IN SCORING FOR FRIARS... Sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) finished the season third on the team in scoring with 29 points (14 goals, 15 assist) in 34 games. His 29 points marked the most points by a PC freshman since Fernando Pisani recorded 30 points in 1996-97. He recorded eight multiple-point games this season. On February 5, Fregoe scored two goals, including the gamewinner at 1:29 of overtime, in PC's 4-3 victory against Merrimack. For his efforts, he was named HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week.
