WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Association’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon (March 11).
Gillies helped the Friars to a weekend split with seventh-ranked UMass Lowell as the Friars clinched home ice for the Hockey East Quarterfinals for the first time in 10 years. On Friday night (March8), Gillies made 31 saves as the Friars blanked the River Hawks, 3-0. Gillies earned his fifth shutout of the season to extend his single-season Friar record. Then on Saturday night (March 9), he made 22 saves as the Friars fell to the River Hawks, 4-1.
For the weekend, Gillies posted a 1.53 goals against average, made 53 saves and had a .946 save percentage.
A 2013 Walter Brown Award semifinalist, Gillies has earned multiple Hockey East honors this season, including being named Rookie of the Month twice (November and February), Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 15, Nov. 26, Feb. 11 and March 11) and Rookie of the Week (Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Jan. 14, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25).
After tying for third in the regular season standings and earning the fourth seed, Gillies and the Friars will play host to fifth-seeded New Hampshire in a best-of-three series that begins at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena on Friday, March 15. Game two will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 and is slated to be televised live on the New England Sports Network (NESN). If necessary, game three will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 17 and will also be carried by NESN.
