Sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon (March 3).
Gillies went 2-0-0 in a weekend road sweep at Maine (Feb. 28 - March 1), helping the Friars to a third-place finish in Hockey East. In the two games, Gillies posted a 2.00 goals against average while stopping 63 of the 67 shots he faced for a .940 save percentage. In Saturday night's 3-2 win, he made 35 saves including 15 in the third period.
For the season, Gillies has a 16-7-5 record to go along with a 2.22 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. It marks Gillies' third Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, having also won the award on Oct. 14 and Jan. 20. He was named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for October and November, 2013.
Gillies and the 10th-ranked Friars have a bye into the Hockey East quarterfinals and will host a best-of-three series on March 14-16. Tickets, which are $15 each, can be purchased by clicking here, or by calling the Providence College ticket office at 401-865-GOPC.
