PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (18-14-1, 12-10-1) HOCKEY NOTES:

FRIARS RECORD A 1-1-1 MARK LAST WEEK... The PC Friars registered a 1-1-1 mark last week. On Feb. 23, PC skated to a 5-5 overtime tie against BC at Schneider Arena. Senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) led the Friar offense with two goals. PC's other goals were scored by junior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta), senior Jon Coe (Anoka, Minn.) and sophomore Mike Farrell (Carmel, Ind.). Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 30 saves in the tie. On Feb. 26, the Friars earned a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena. Lake, sophomore J.J. Picinic (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Farrell each scored for PC. Senior goaltender Mark Kane (Edmonton, Alberta) registered 30 saves for the Friars. On Feb. 27, UMass defeated the Friars, 3-1, at Amherst, Mass. Junior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta) tallied the lone goal for PC. Ballard made 25 stops in the loss.

FARRELL STEPS UP ON OFFENSE... Sophomore defenseman Mike Farrell (Carmel, Ind.) recorded five points in three games last week. On Feb. 23, Farrell registered three points (one goal, two assists) in PC's 5-5 tie against Boston College. On Feb. 26, the sophomore defenseman notched the game-winning goal in the Friars' 3-2 victory against UMass-Amherst. The following night, he assisted on PC's only goal in a 3-1 loss at UMass-Amherst. A 1998 eighth-round draft pick of the Washington Capitals, Farrell has registered three goals and 10 assists in 24 games this season.

LAKE SCORES FOR FRIARS... Senior center Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) scored one goal in PC's 3-2 win against UMass-Amherst on Feb. 26 at Schneider Arena. Lake is tied for the team lead in goals (16) and power-play goals (eight). He netted two power-play goals in PC's 5-5 tie against Boston College on Feb. 23. For Lake it was his third multiple-goal game this season. His two-point effort against Boston College was his eighth multiple-point game this season. He is fifth on the team in scoring with a career high 27 points (16 goals, 11 assists). He has recorded 65 points (34 goals, 31 assists) in 123 career games.

MacNEVIN PRODUCES ON OFFENSE... Junior defenseman Josh MacNevin, who notched one goal in PC's 3-1 loss against UMass-Amherst on Feb. 27, is fourth on the team in scoring with 31 points (five goals, 26 assists). He leads all Friar defensemen in scoring. MacNevin's two-assist effort against BC on Feb. 23 was the 13th multiple-point game of his career and his eighth this season. In PC's 3-2 win against Brown on Jan. 12 in the Mayor's Cup, MacNevin assisted on all three Friar goals. His three assist-effort against Brown marked the third time in his career he recorded three assists in a game. A 1996 fourth-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, MacNevin has 64 points (15 goals, 49 assists) in 94 career games.

HOCKEY EAST COACHES' POLL... For the third consecutive season, the Friars were picked to finish fifth by the league's nine head coaches in their preseason balloting. With PC's 5-5 tie against BC on Feb. 23, the Friars clinched fourth place for the third time in the last four years.

NEXT GAME... PC will play its final game of the regular season on Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m. against Northeastern at Matthews Arena in Boston.

THE PROVIDENCE-NORTHEASTERN SERIES... Sunday's game will be the 104th meeting between the two schools. Providence leads the all-time series 62-34-7. The two teams first met on Dec. 22, 1953 with Northeastern defeating Providence, 5-4, in overtime at the Boston Garden. PC's last win against the Huskies was a 5-3 victory on Jan. 8, 1999 at Matthews Arena. The last time PC was defeated by Northeastern, the Friars dropped a 5-4 decision on Jan. 9, 1999 at Schneider Arena.

AT MATTHEWS ARENA... Since 1957 the Friars have posted a 29-17-4 mark against the Huskies at Matthews Arena. In the Friars' last game at Matthews Arena, PC defeated Northeastern, 5-3, on Jan. 8, 1999. PC's last loss to Northeastern at Matthews Arena was a 3-2 defeat on Nov. 25, 1997.

THIS SEASON VS. THE HUSKIES... The Friars have recorded a 1-1 mark against Northeastern this season. On Jan. 8, the Friars earned a 5-3 win against the Huskies at Matthews Arena. The Friars were led by junior Doug Sheppard who scored two goals, including the game winner. The Friars' other goals were scored by junior Jason Ialongo, senior Jon Cameron and junior Fernando Pisani. Sophomore Boyd Ballard recorded 34 stops in the win. The following night, Northeastern overcame a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes of the game to earn a 5-4 win against the Friars. PC's goals were scored by Cameron, Pisani, Ialongo and junior Jerry Keefe. Ballard recorded 30 stops in the loss.
