Jon Gillies and the Friars will play Boston College in a home-and-home series this weekend.

Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Association’s Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon (Feb. 25).
Gillies earned the honor after helping the Friars to a weekend sweep of Northeastern. On Friday night, Gillies made 35 saves in Providence’s 6-2 win over the Huskies at Schneider Arena. Then on Saturday night, Gillies stopped 32 shots as Providence edged Northeastern, 3-2, to sweep the Huskies and move into a tie for first in the Hockey East standings. It was the Friars’ first win at Matthews Arena in over five years, dating back to a 5-1 victory on Jan. 25, 2008.
For the weekend, Gillies made 67 saves and posted a .944 save percentage to go along with a 2.00 goals against average.
A 2013 Walter Brown Award semifinalist, Gillies has earned multiple Hockey East honors this season, including being named Rookie of the Month (November), Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 15, Nov. 26 and Feb. 11) and Rookie of the Week (Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Jan. 14, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25).
This weekend, Gillies and the Friars play a home-and-home series with fourth-ranked Boston College. At 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, Providence hosts the Eagles (Cox Sports on OSN) and then at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, the Friars play at Conte Forum (NESN).
