Men's hockey freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) has earned Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week honors following Providence’s 1-0-1 week against No. 5 New Hampshire (W, 1-0) and No. 19 Merrimack (T, 2-2).
Gillies helped the Friars to a home win over UNH, 1-0, on Wednesday night by stopping all 37 shots he faced for his Providence College record fourth shutout of the season. Then, also at home on Sunday, Gillies stopped 24 of the 26 shots he faced as Providence and Merrimack skated to a 2-2 tie. For the week, Gillies posted a 0.96 goals against average and a .968 save percentage while making 61 saves.
A 2013 Walter Brown Award semifinalist, Gillies has earned multiple Hockey East honors this season, including being named Rookie of the Month (November), Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 15, Nov. 26 and Feb. 11) and Rookie of the Week (Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Jan. 14 and Feb. 18).
Gillies and the Friars return to the ice on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7:00 p.m. for the first half of a home-and-home series with Northeastern. Friday's game will be held at Schneider Arena, followed by a 7:00 p.m. game at Matthews Arena on Saturday night.
