The Providence College men's hockey team was named Hockey East Team of the Week, while junior forward Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) was tabbed Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Monday, February 13. It's the third time this season that the Friars have earned the league's team of the week honors. For Schaller, it's the second time he has garnered the league's player of the week accolade.
The Friars recorded consecutive victories over No. 12 Maine (5-4) on Friday, February 10 and UMass (4-3) on Saturday, February 11 to improve to 12-14-2 overall and 10-10-1 in Hockey East. The 12 wins are the most since the 2007-08 team had 14, while the 10 league triumphs are more than the previous two seasons combined. In the win over Maine, senior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) had two goals and one assist to lead the Friars. Freshman Shane Luke (Dauphin, Man.) also scored and Schaller netted the game winner to go along with one assist. In goal, senior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) totaled 27 stops.
Schaller notched one goal and one assist, while Beaudry matched a season-high 32 saves to lead the Friars past UMass on Saturday. Seniors David Brown (Centennial, Colo.), Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.), freshmen Damian Cross (Nepean, Ont.) and Luke also scored for the Friars.
The Friars are back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17 and Saturday, February 18 when they face Northeastern in Boston, Mass.
