WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Freshman forward Nick Saracino (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) earned weekly Hockey East honors following Providence's 3-3 tie at No. 4/5 New Hampshire on Sunday, Feb. 10. Saracino was named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, while Gilles was named the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Saracino assisted on classmate John Gilmour's (Montreal, Quebec) power-play goal in the first period and then added two third period goals to help the Friars to the 3-3 tie at the Whittemore Center. His two goals and three points were career high marks. In two games versus the Wildcats this season, Saracino has registered five of his 10 points. Following a last second game-tying goal against Boston College on Dec. 7, Saracino was also named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Dec. 10.
Gillies turned in a 41-save performance on Sunday to help the Friars to the tie. He stopped all 17 shots he faced in the first period to stake the Friars to a 1-0 lead and also made 14 saves in the third period and stopped the only shot he faced in overtime. A 2013 Walter Brown Award semifinalist, Gillies has earned multiple Hockey East honors, including being named Rookie of the Month (November), Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 15, Nov. 26 and Feb. 11) and Rookie of the Week (Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Jan. 14).
The Friars and Wildcats will close out their regular-season series at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in a game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 8 but was postponed due to the recent blizzard.
