Men's Hockey Weekly Notes, 2/7/99
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (14-13, 9-9) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS SPLIT WITH UMASS-LOWELL... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark on Feb. 5-6 against UMass-Lowell. On Feb. 5, PC earned a 5-2 win at the Tsongas Arena. Junior Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.), senior Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia), sophomore Mike Farrell (Carmel, Ind.), junior Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) all scored for the Friars. Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 24 saves in the win. The following night, the River Hawks defeated the Friars, 4-2, at Schneider Arena. Senior Jon Coe (Anoka, Minn.) and Drew Omicioli each scored in the loss. Ballard recorded 31 saves for the Friars. SUCCESS ON THE ROAD, TROUBLES AT HOME... In the Friars' 12 games in 1999, the team has posted a 7-5 record. Interestingly in this 12-game span, the team's success has been on the road where the Friars have recorded a 6-1 mark. Unfortunately, PC has registered a 1-4 mark at home in 1999. PISANI JOINS 100 POINT CLUB... Junior left wing Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) notched two assists in the Friars' 5-2 win against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 5. His two assists against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 5 gave him 101 career points. Pisani became the 43rd player in the 48-year history of PC hockey to record 100 or more points in his career. He is the first player to reach 100 or more points in his junior season since All-American Chad Quenneville accomplished the feat in 1995. The two-point effort against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 5 was his 25th career multiple-point game and his 11th multiple-point game this season. He has recorded three or more points in a game 11 times in his career and has registered four or more points in a game three times in his career. A 1996 eighth-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, Pisani has recorded 101 points (39 goals, 62 assists) in 98 career games. In 27 games this season, he is third on the team in scoring with 11 goals and 26 assists. MIKE OMICIOLI CONTINUES TO CLIMB PC SCORING CHART... Senior center Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.), who notched three assists in PC's two games against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 5-6, ranks 23rd all-time in scoring at Providence College with 127 points (44 goals, 83 assists) in 124 games. Omicioli also ranks 18th all-time in assists with 83. This season, he is second on the team in goals (14) and scoring (39 points). With 39 points this season, Omicioli is one point shy of recording his first 40-point season. OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN... Junior defenseman Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.) netted his team leading sixth power-play goal in PC's 5-2 win against UMass-Lowell on Feb. 5. On Jan. 29, he tallied two power-play goals in PC's 7-4 loss to Maine. It marked his third multiple-point game this season. Six of Ialongo's nine goals this season have been scored in man-advantage situations. In 26 games this season, the Cranston, R.I. native has registered a career high 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists). NEXT WEEK'S GAMES... PC will play two home games next weekend. On Friday, the Friars will play their final non-league contest of the season against Army at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, PC will host Boston University at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. THE PROVIDENCE-ARMY SERIES... Friday's game is the 25th meeting between the two schools. Providence leads the all-time series 17-7-0. The two teams first met on Jan. 7, 1953 with the Friars defeating Army, 6-3, at Smith Rink. The two teams last met on Nov. 14, 1997 in which Providence earned a 5-4 win at Tate Rink. PC has won the last 11 games between the two teams. Army's last victory against the Friars was a 5-3 win on Jan. 1, 1968 at Smith Rink. LAST SEASON VS. ARMY... Last season, PC defeated Army, 5-4, at West Point, N.Y. on Nov. 14, 1997. Doug Sheppard, Nick Sinerate, Mike Omicioli, Fernando Pisani and Jerry Keefe each scored for the Friars. Goaltender Boyd Ballard made 24 stops in the win. AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... PC has posted a 3-0 mark against the Cadets at Schneider Arena. In the Friars' last game against Army at Schneider Arena, the Friars defeated the Cadets, 7-2, on Oct. 18, 1996. The Friars have posted a 6-1 home record against Army. FRIARS VS. NON CONFERENCE OPPONENTS... PC has posted a 5-4 mark against non-conference opponents this season. The Friars are 1-1 versus CCHA teams, 1-1 against WCHA squads and 3-2 versus ECAC foes. PROVIDENCE-BOSTON UNIVERSITY SERIES... Saturday's game will be the 114th meeting between the two schools. Boston University leads the all-time series 72-34-7. The two teams first met on February 25, 1927 with Boston University defeating Providence, 12-0, at the Rhode Island Auditorium. The loss to the Terriers was one of seven defeats the Friars suffered in their first season of collegiate competition (1-7-0). The Friars' last win against the Terriers was a 6-4 victory at Walter Brown Arena on Oct. 31, 1998. PC's last loss to Boston University was a 3-2 defeat on Feb. 21, 1998 at Brown Arena. AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted 15-18-3 record against BU at Schneider Arena. In PC's last game against BU at Schneider Arena, the Friars defeated the Terriers, 5-4, on Oct. 30, 1998. PC last loss to the was a 5-1 defeat on Feb. 20, 1998.
THIS SEASON VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY... The Friars have posted a 2-0 mark against Boston University this season. On Oct. 30, the Friars defeated Boston University, 5-4, at Schneider Arena. Senior left wing Mike Omicioli led the Friar offense with two goals and one assist. Junior defenseman Jason Ialongo, junior right wing Doug Sheppard and senior left wing Jon Coe also scored for the Friars. Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard recorded 26 saves in the win. The following night, PC defeated the Terriers, 6-4, at Walter Brown Arena. Junior center Jerry Keefe recorded his first career hat trick and added two assists to pace the offense. Junior right wing Fernando Pisani netted two goals and junior right wing Nick Lent added one goal for the Friars. Ballard registered 29 stops in net.
