Former Men's Hockey Players Help Build U.S. And Canadian Olympic Teams

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

    Former Providence College men’s hockey players Brian Burke and Bob Nicholson helped build the U.S. and Canadian Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey teams that will pursue the gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

    Burke ‘77 is serving as the Director of Player Personnel for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. A veteran of USA Hockey, Burke served as the general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team that took home the silver medal in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is the current President of Hockey Operations and Acting General Manager for the Calgary Flames.

    Nicholson, who was a teammate of Burke’s at Providence during the 1973-74 season under Head Coach Lou Lamoriello, has been Hockey Canada’s president and CEO since 1998. Nicholson has helped Canada win 66 medals in international competition since 1990, including five Olympic gold medals (2002 – men, 2002 – women, 2006 – women, 2010 – men, 2010 - women).

    The 2014 Olympic Winter Games begin on Feb. 7, while the men’s hockey tournament opens with group play on Feb. 12 and concludes with the gold medal game on Feb. 23.

    All-time, four former Friars have played in the Olympics: Gates Orlando ‘84 (Italy - ‘92, ‘94, ‘98), Chris Therien ‘93 (Canada - ‘94), Chris Terreri (USA - ‘88), Paul Guay ‘83 (USA - ‘84).
