Men's Hockey Versus UMass Lowell: Game Preview And Notes
Feb. 6, 2002 PROVIDENCE HOCKEY PREVIEW Providence College vs. #12 UMass Lowell Preview for game on Friday, February 8th Schneider Arena * 7:00 p.m. INTERNET BROADCAST AT www.friars.com PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS (13-13-3 overall/8-8-1 HOCKEY EAST) The Friars (13-13-3 overall/8-8-1 HOCKEY EAST) head into this weekend hosting #12 UMass Lowell and traveling to #3 University of New Hampshire, two important games for PC. Last weekend the Friars were defeated at Northeastern but rebounded to defeat UMass Amherst in Mass. on Saturday. The Friars are need points to move up in the standings if they want to get home ice for the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinals. Junior co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) is leading the Friars in scoring and ranks third in HOCKEY EAST in points. DiSalvatore has scored 14 goals and has a career-high 21 assists for 35 points. DiSalvatore has registered at least one point in his last six games, posting 1-9-10 in those games. Since the start of January, DiSalvatore has registered a point in nine of 10 games, recording 4-13-17 totals. Junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) has started 25 of the 27 games he has played in this year, posting a 3.32 goals against average, a .901 save percentage and an 11-12-3 record. He has logged 1573:29 minutes this season out of a possible 1761:28 total minutes and he ranks eighth at Providence College with 1,858 career saves. #12 UMASS LOWELL RIVER HAWKS (17-8-1 overall/9-6-1 HOCKEY EAST) The UMass Lowell River Hawks (17-8-1 overall/9-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST play) come in to Providence after they snapped a five-game losing streak last weekend, defeating Merrimack College 5-2. The River Hawks had lost twice to Northeastern and Maine and once to Brown before defeating Merrimack on Sunday. Junior forward Ed McGrane, the reigning KOHO/HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week, is the leading scoring for Lowell. McGrane registered his first career hat trick on Sunday in the win over Merrimack. He enters tonight's game with 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points in 25 games this season. UMass Lowell is short-handed at this point in the season, as their three Frenchmen: Yorick Treille, Baptiste Amar and Laurent Meunier are all will the French National Hockey Team in Salt Lake City, Utah for the Winter Olympics. Senior goaltender Cam McCormick leads the River Hawks, HOCKEY EAST and the Nation in goaltending. He has posted a 12-4-1 record in 17 games this season and added a 1.38 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.
