Sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) picked up his second Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season it was announced by the conference on Monday afternoon (Jan. 20).
Gillies went 1-0-1 in a pair of weekend road games at Colorado College (Jan. 17-18), helping the Friars to a 2-2 tie on Friday night and a 7-2 win over the Tigers on Saturday night. In Friday night’s tie, Gillies made 27 saves, including three in overtime to preserve the tie. In the two games, Gillies stopped 55 of the 59 shots he faced, posted a 1.93 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.
For the season, Gillies has an 11-3-4 record to go along with a 2.00 goals against average and a .936 save percentage. His goals against average ranks tied for ninth nationally, while his save percentage ranks third.
It marks Gillies’ second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season, having also won the award on Oct. 14. He was also named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for October and November, 2013.
Gillies and the Friars return to Hockey East play this weekend with a home-and-home series against 10th-ranked UMass-Lowell, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 24 at Schneider Arena. The game will be televised locally by CoxSports on OSN.
