Men's Hockey To Host Brown In 14th Annual Mayor's Cup Clash

BROWN UNIVERSITY (3-12-0) - The Mayor's Cup Game features the only two colleges in Rhode Island that sponsor Division I men's ice hockey. The Providence College/Brown University men's hockey series began in 1927 with a 4-1 victory by Brown at the Rhode Island Auditorium. Since 1927, the two teams have battled 78 times with the Bears holding a 39-38-1 lead in the series. In 1986, the annual game became known as the Mayor's Cup. The game features the tradition of the Mayor of Providence presenting the winner with a trophy. Brown last won the Mayor's Cup on January 31, 1998 with a 6-3 victory at Schneider Arena ... The two teams first met on March 1, 1927 with Brown defeating Providence, 3-1, at the Rhode Island Auditorium ... Junior Matt Kohansky (Norfolk, Mass.) leads the team in scoring (eight points) and is tied for the team lead in goals (four). Senior goaltender Scott Stirling (Hull, Mass.) has played in 10 of the team's 15 games this season. He has posted a 3.58 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (11-9-1) - Last year, PC's Drew Omicioli scored at 10:30 of the third period to give the Friars a 3-2 win against cross-town rival Brown University in the 13th annual Mayor's Cup game. The win raised the Friars record to 8-4-1 in the Mayor's Cup series and gave PC its first win against Brown since Jan. 17, 1995. ... The Friars have posted a 6-2 record at home this season and an 8-2-1 mark in non-conference action ... The Friars have recorded a 10-7-0 record against Brown at Schneider Arena, including a 3-3 mark in Mayor's Cup action. PC's last win against the Bears at Schneider Arena was a 9-5 victory on December 2, 1991. The Friars' last loss to the Bears at Schneider Arena was a 6-3 defeat on January 31, 1998. ... Senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) leads the team in scoring (26 points), goals (11), assists (15) and power-play goals. Freshman Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) and junior Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) have shared the goaltending duties this season. Schaefer has a 2.40 goals against average and a .924 save percentage, while Ballard has recorded a 2.62 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.
