Jan. 14, 2013
WAKEFIELD, Mass. -
Freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named the Hockey East Association’s Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Gillies earned the honor after helping the Friars to a pair of wins in a home-and-home weekend series against UMass. On Friday night (Jan. 11), Gillies stopped 26 shots, including 12 in the third period, as the Friars downed the Minutemen at the Mullins Center, 5-4. Then on Saturday night (Jan. 12) at Schneider Arena, Gillies made a career high 44 saves to lead Providence to a 2-0 win. With the victory, Gillies became the first freshman in Friar history to post three shutouts in a season (he also shutout Maine on Oct. 27 and Brown on Nov. 24).
With the weekend sweep, the Friars claimed the season series versus the Minutemen for the third consecutive season (2-1-0 in 2012-13). In the two wins over the weekend, Gillies made 70 saves, posted a 2.00 goals against average and a .946 save percentage. Gillies' save total of 44 on Saturday night tied for the 17th most all-time in a single game at Providence and was the most since Alex Beaudry made 47 saves on Oct. 31, 2009 in a 2-1 Friar win at UMass.
It marks Gillies’ fifth weekly Hockey East honor as he also earned Defensive Player of the Week honors (Oct. 15 & Nov. 26) in addition to his previous Rookie of the Week awards (Oct. 22 and 29). Gillies was also named the Hockey East Rookie of the Month for October.
Gillies and the Friars are back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 at UMass Lowell in a game that will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. The teams will meet for the first time since Providence downed the River Hawks, two games to one, in the 2012 Hockey East Quarterfinals.
