PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 14th Annual Mayor's Cup game between Providence College and Brown University will be played on Tuesday, January 18 at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m. For the first time ever, Meeting Street Center has been designated as the official charity of the Mayor's Cup Game and will receive a portion of the revenue generated from ticket sales to the annual game.

The Mayor's Cup Game features the only two colleges in Rhode Island that sponsor Division I men's ice hockey. The Providence College/Brown University men's hockey series began in 1927 with a 4-1 victory by Brown at the Rhode Island Auditorium. Since 1927, the two teams have battled 78 times with the Bears holding a 39-38-1 lead in the series. In 1986, the annual game became known as the Mayor's Cup. The game features the tradition of the Mayor of Providence presenting the winner with a trophy. Providence College captured last season's Mayor's Cup clash, 3-2, and leads the series with an 8-4-1 mark.

Brown has recorded a 3-10 mark this season. Junior Matt Kohansky (Norfolk, Mass.) leads the Bears in scoring with four goals and four assists in eight games. In goal, senior Scott Stirling (Hull, Mass.), son of former PC Head Coach Steve Stirling, is the Bears' top goaltender. In eight games this season, Stirling has recorded a 3.18 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.

The Friars currently have an 11-9 record. PC is led offensively by Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) who has 10 goals and 15 assists in 20 games. Freshman Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) and junior Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) have split the goaltending duties this season. Schaefer is one of the top goaltenders in HOCKEY EAST with a .931 save percentage and a 2.24 goals against average, while Ballard has recorded a .910 save percentage and a 2.62 goals against average.

Each team has several Rhode Island natives. Brown juniors Christian Warrington (Slatersville, R.I.) and forward John Petricig (Cranston, R.I.) both hail from Rhode Island. In addition, Kohansky attended Mt. St. Charles. For PC, sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) and senior Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.) both reside in Rhode Island.

Tickets for the game are $8 for adults and $4 for children and can be purchased at the PC Ticket Office at (401) 865-GO PC or by calling the Meeting Street Center at (401) 438-9500.
