Friars hockey ends eight-game winless streak with shutout
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The Providence College Friars ended an eight-game winless streak with a 2-0 victory against the Merrimack Warriors in HOCKEY EAST action on Sunday, Feb. 8 at North Andover, Mass. PC netminder Mark Kane recorded 26 saves while earning his first career shutout.
In the closing moments of a closely played first period, PC's Nick Lent tallied the first goal of the game when he took a feed from Jerry Keefe and one timed a shot past Merrimack netminder Tom Welby at 18:41 of the first period.
Fifty six seconds into the second stanza, PC increased its lead to 2-0 as Mike Mader's shot through a screen eluded Welby and found the back of the net for the only score of the period and the final goal of the game. Welby recorded 24 saves for Merrimack.
With the victory Providence raised its record to 13-11-3 overall and 7-8-2 in HOCKEY EAST play, while Merrimack fell to 9-17-1 overall and 4-13-0 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, Feb. 13 at New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m.
