PC Falls to Colgate, 3-2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Colgate University used three power-play goals to defeat the Providence College Friars, 3-2, Sunday, Jan. 4 in men's hockey action at PC's Schneider Arena.
In a first period marred by penalties, the Colgate Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead on two power-play goals. Junior Ryan Faubert connected on the first Colgate goal when he one-timed a shot from five feet in front of the net past PC netminder Boyd Ballard at 8:25. The Red Raiders increased their lead with their second man-advantage tally of the period as Jed Whitchurch lifted in a rebound at the 17:17 mark.
After a scoreless second period, Jon Coe put the Friars on the scoreboard with a short-handed goal at the 1:49 mark of the third period. Colgate took advantage of a five-on-three power play when Faubert netted his second goal of the game to give the Red Raiders a 3-1 lead at 2:35 of the third. The Friars staged a late comeback as Coe brought PC within one goal when he scored on a low slap shot at the 16:32 mark. However, the Colgate defense withstood the Friars' offensive surge and preserved the 3-2 victory.
Colgate netminder Dan Brenzavich made 30 stops in the win. Ballard recorded 26 saves for Providence.
With the win Colgate raised its record to 11-5, while Providence fell to 11-5-1.
