Providence Falls to Brown in Mayor's Cup
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In the 12th annual Mayor's Cup, the Brown University Bears defeated the Providence College Friars, 6-3, in men's hockey action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at PC's Schneider Arena. The win gave Brown its third consecutive Mayor's Cup title.
Brent Hoiness tallied the first goal of the game to give Brown a 1-0 lead when he tipped in a shot from the left point on the power play at 9:39 of the first period. The Friars tied the game in a four-on-four situation as Mike Farrell ripped a one-timer from the top of the slot which beat Brown goaltender Scott Stirling low to the stick side at the 17:39 mark of the first. Damian Prescott gave the Bears a 2-1 lead at the end of one period as he notched the team's second power-play goal of the game with 34 seconds remaining in the first.
Forty four seconds into the second period Farrell tallied his second goal of the game to even the score at 2-2. Brown stormed back with three unanswered goals by Hoiness at 2:42, Prescott at 15:06 and Shawn Brackenridge at 15:49 to take a 5-2 lead after two periods.
Doug Sheppard added a power-play goal at 8:19 of the third period for the Friars' final goal. Brown's Prescott added an empty-net power-play goal at 19:40 of the third to complete the hat trick and seal the win for the Bears.
Stirling made 31 saves in net to earn the win for the Bears. Ballard and Mark Kane combined to record 20 stops for the Friars.
With the win Brown raised its record to 5-12-1 while Providence dropped to 12-11-2.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, Feb. 6 at Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
