BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Dartmouth College defeated the Providence College men's hockey team, 4-1, Sunday, Dec. 28 in the championship game of the Sheraton/USAirways Classic in Burlington, Vt.
Dartmouth jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Charlie Retter broke down the right wing and skated around a PC defenseman before wristing a shot past Friar goaltender Boyd Ballard at the 2:00 mark of the first period. Forty eight seconds later the Friars evened the game as freshman J.J. Picinic pounced on a loose puck and banged home a rebound past Dartmouth netminder Eric Almon to record his first his first collegiate goal.
The Big Green took command of the game in the second period as Scott Peach notched two power-play goals at 5:38 and 6:04. Peach broke the 1-1 tie during a five-on-three power-play when he blasted home a goal from 10 feet in front of the net. He notched his second tally 26 second later with a slap shot from the left point.
Ryan Chaytors added an empty net goal to seal the win for the Big Green at 19:27 of the third period. Almon made 27 saves in the win. Ballard recorded 18 stops for the Friars. With the win Dartmouth improved to 4-3-3, while Providence fell to 11-4-1. Providence College will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 4 against Colgate at PC's Schneider Areana at 2:00 p.m.
