Northeastern Edges Providence
BOSTON, Mass. -- Providence College was defeated by Northeastern, 3-2, on Tuesday, Nov. 25 in HOCKEY EAST action a NU's Matthews Arena. The loss ended the Friars' six-game winning streak.
Northeastern took a 1-0 lead on the only goal of the first period as sophomore Billy Newson wristed a low shot past PC freshman goaltender Boyd Ballard at the 15:50 mark.
The Huskies extended their lead in the second period to 3-0 on two goals by sophomore Todd Barclay. Barclay struck first on the power play at 4:56 and two minutes later he streaked down the left side and blasted in a slap shot from 25 feet. Sophomore Doug Sheppard put the Friars on the board as he broke in and slipped a low shot under NU sophomore netminder Marc Robitaille at 17:24 of the second period.
Junior Mike Omicioli brought the Friars within one goal as he lifted in a high backhander from four feet at 6:26 of the third period. However, the NU defense held the Friars scoreless the remainder of the third period and the Huskies earned their second win of the season against PC.
With the win Northeastern raised its record to 5-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in league action.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, Nov. 28 against Yale at PC's Schneider Arena.
