Men's Hockey Defeats UMass-Lowell
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Providence College defeated the UMass-Lowell River Hawks, 5-3, on Sunday, Nov. 16 in HOCKEY EAST action at PC's Schneider Arena. Junior Mike Omicioli led the PC offense with four assists.
Providence sophomore Fernando Pisani tallied the only goal of the first period when he slid a low shot by UMass-Lowell netminder Scott Fankhouser on a power play at 2:31 of the first period. The River Hawks threatened to tie the game during a five-on-three power-play but PC freshman netminder Boyd Ballard withstood the surge making 11 saves.
In a penalty filled second period, the Friars increased their lead to 2-0 as junior Jon Cameron scored on a high blast from the top of right circle at the 19:20 mark.
The offense increased in the third period as the two teams combined for six goals in the final 20 minutes. The Friars built a 5-0 lead as sophomores Doug Sheppard, Rich Miller and Jason Ialongo each scored for the Friars in the first seven minutes of the period. Sophomore Sean Storozuk put the River Hawks on the scoreboard with a power-play tally at 8:36 of the third. Sophomore Chris Bell netted UMass-Lowell's second goal at 12:45 and Storozuk recorded the final goal of the game at the 19:35 mark.
Ballard registered a career high 38 stops while improving his record to 4-0 for the season. Fankhouser made 19 saves for the River Hawks.
With the win PC improved to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in HOCKEY EAST while UMass-Lowell fell to 5-3 and 3-2 in league action.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, Nov. 21 at the UMass-Amherst.
