Friars Down Army, 5-4
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Providence College defeated Army, 5-4, Friday, Nov. 14 in men's hockey action at West Point, N.Y.
Providence College took a 1-0 lead when Doug Sheppard pushed in rebound off Jerry Keefe's shot at 2:02 of the first period. Four minutes later (6:02) Nick Sinerate scored the Friars' second goal to give PC a 2-0 lead. Army got on the scoreboard at 11:18 of the first when Andy Lundbohm one timed a shot on a breakaway past PC netminder Boyd Ballard. Jason Choi evened the game at 2-2 for Black Knights at 15:27 of the first period with his fourth goal of the season.
Army took its first lead of the game at 8:28 of the second period as Mike Fairman scored on a wrap around move to notch his first collegiate tally. Mike Omicioli created a 3-3 tie with his third goal of the season at 14:32 of the second. PC took a 4-3 lead when Fernando Pisani dug the puck out of the left corner and beat Army goaltender Daryl Chamberlain at the 17:28 mark.
Jerry Keefe took advantage of an awkward bounce off the end boards and shot the puck in the empty net at 1:01 of the third as Chamberlain was out of the net attempting to play the puck off the boards. Jon Toftey got Army within one goal (5-4) as he tipped in a shot on a power play at 12:53 of the third.
Ballard registered 24 saves for PC and earned his third win of the season. Chamberlain recorded 25 stops for Army.
With the win, PC improved to 4-2 overall while Army fell to 2-5.
Providence College will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 16 against UMass-Lowell at PC's Schneider Arena.
