PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's ice hockey team (5-7-1) lost to Merrimack College (4-9-1) by the score of 5-2 in the championship game of the second annual Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament, held this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Merrimack sophomore forward Mike Alexiou (Pickering, Ont.) scored three goals through out the tournament, including two in tonite's game, and earned MVP honors.

Back-to-back Merrimack goals gave the Warriors a quick 2-0 lead mid-way through the first period.

Junior defenseman Rob Lalonde (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored his fourth goal of the season as he put home a feed from junior forward Matt Johnson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and senior forward Steve Crusco (Waltham, Mass.) 11:20 into the first period.

Sophomore forward Jordan Black (Canton, Mich.) would follow 10 seconds later with his seventh goal of the year to give Merrimack a 2-0 lead. He was assisted on the play by freshman forward Jarrett Sousa (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore forward Justin Mills (Edgerton, Alta).

The Friars scored an early second period goal as sophomore forward Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) tallied his first collegiate goal. It came 32-seconds into the frame, and was assisted by senior forward David Carpentier (Faribault, Mich.) and sophomore forward Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.).

Zancanaro would add a power play goal to knot it, 2-2, 15:03 into the second period. It was his second goal of the season and gave him his third multiple-point contest of the year. Sophomore forward Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) and Horan notched assists on the play.

But Merrimack came back with three unanswered as Alexiou notched a power play goal 19:56 into the second period. The tournament MVP put home a rebound in front of the net for his sixth goal of the season. He was assisted by Jordan and junior defenseman Brian Schmidt (Bloomington, Mich.).

 

 

Alexiou would score his second of the game, third of the weekend, and eighth of the season midway through the third period to make it 4-2, Warriors. Junior defenseman Brian Boulay (Auburn, Mass.) would add the fifth Merrimack score with a power play goal with under nine minutes left in the game to put away.

With the loss, Providence dropped to 0-5 when its opponent scores the first goal. The Friars also out shot the Warriors, 32-16. The game did not count as a HOCKEY EAST conference contest.

Earlier today in the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament consolation game, Holy Cross (4-5-3) defeated Union (7-6-1) by the score of 3-1.
