Men's Hockey Falls to Brown, 5-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 14th-ranked Providence College Friars were defeated by the Brown Bears, 5-1, in college hockey action, on Friday, November 3, 2000 at Brown's Meehan Auditorium. With the victory, Brown captured the 15th annual Mayor's Cup, PC is now 8-6-1 all-time in Mayor's Cup games.
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead on a Doug Janjevich goal at the 8:09 mark of the first period assisted by Pascal Denis and Tye Korbal. PC responded, as J.J. Picinic tallied his third goal of the season, assisted by Matt Libby at 13:15.
Then Brown took command of the game, tallying three second period goals, while opening a 4-1 lead. Josh Barker started the Brown offensive explosion at the 4:21 mark, notching a power-play goal, assisted by Jon Zielinski and Keith Kirley. At the 11:28 mark, Brown's John Petricig beat Friars' goaltender Boyd Ballard for the Bear's third goal. Less than one minute later, Brown tallied another goal, this time from Christian Warrington.
Brown added a third period score from Zielinski at the 6:26 mark, in route to their 5-1 victory. The win marked the second straight Mayor' Cup title for the Brown Bears and their fourth in six years.
Ballard recorded 25 saves for the Friars, while Brian Eklund stopped 31 shots in the win.
With the loss, the Friars' drop to 4-1-1, while Brown improves to 1-1-0.
Providence College will return to action on Friday, November 10, versus the New Hampshire Wildcats at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
