ORONO, Maine - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by Maine, 3-1, Saturday night in the second of back-to-back games at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Friars are now 2-3-1 overall and 2-2 in Hockey East action. The Black Bears improved to 3-2-1 and 3-1 in Hockey East.
Maine struck first at 10:55 of the first period when Adam Shemansky fired a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle and over the glove of senior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.). The Friars used the power play to even the score at 12:52 as red-shirt freshman Damian Cross (Nepean, Ont.) ripped a slapper from the left circle and into the net for his second goal of the season. Sophomore Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Stefan Demopoulos (La Mesa, Calif.) assisted on the goal.
Maine needed 23 seconds to take a 2-1 lead in the second period as Matt Mangene scored from the right circle. The Friars outshot the Black Bears, 10-5, in the second period, but could not score the equalizer.
In the third period, freshman Matt Montesano (West Bridgewater, Mass.) stole the puck right in front of the Maine net, but Dan Sullivan made a point-blank stop. Klas Leidermark added an empty-net goal to seal the win for Maine. The Black Bears finished with a 28-27 edge in shots. Beaudry stopped 25 shots, while Dan Sullivan had 26 saves.
