PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College men’s hockey team was defeated, 4-0, by Northeastern Friday night in the season opener at Schneider Arena. Tyler McNeely scored twice, while Brad Thiessen made 35 saves to lead the way.

After a scoreless first period, Northeastern (2-0-1, 1-0-0 Hockey East) needed 35 seconds to take the lead for good in the second period as Steve Silva won a faceoff back to Denis Chisholm who fired a slap shot that eluded PC freshman goaltender Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.), who was screened in front. Silva finished with three assists on the night. McNeely then put Northeastern up, 2-0, at 4:53 as he re-directed David Strathman’s shot. The Friars (0-1-0, 0-1-0 Hockey East) had a 17-6 shot advantage in the second period, but were unable to put one past Thiessen. Wade MacLeod gave the Huskies a 3-0 cushion at 11:43 of the third period as he capitalized on a two-on-one rush, while McNeely capped off the scoring with a short-handed tally at 14:27.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 18 with a non-conference game against Bowling Green beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
