Björkqvist’s Buzzer Beater Lifts No. 11/5 Men’s Hockey to 3-2 Win at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio – Providence College sophomore forward Kasper Björkqvist finished off a rebound with 0.9 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the No. 11/5 Friars to a thrilling 3-2 win over Miami on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena.

NOTES
- Providence went to work on the power play just 26 seconds into the contest. Miami’s Carson Meyer was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for boarding Jacob Bryson.
- After coming up empty for the first three minutes of the man-advantage, the Friars converted twice in the span of 26 seconds to grab a 2-0 lead.
- Sophomore Vimal Sukumaran one-timed a cross-crease feed from freshman Jason O’Neill. The assist was O’Neill’s first collegiate point and graduate transfer Tommy Davis earned his first point in a Friar uniform on the play.
- Erik Foley extended the lead to 2-0 after one-timing a shot over the shoulder of Larkin. Josh Wilkins and Bryson were credited with the assists on the play.
- After Brandon Duhaime was ejected for a hit from behind, the Friar penalty kill held the RedHawks scoreless, allowing only three shots.
- The RedHawks got one back on the power play at 13:03 of the second period off the stick of defenseman Grant Hutton.
- Providence nearly re-gained to the two-goal cushion off a slick backhand saucer feed from Scott Conway to Sukumaran, but Larkin managed to go post-to-post in time.
- Miami knotted things up early in the third period as Casey Gilling found a seam through traffic.
- The Friars pushed in the final minutes and were rewarded with under a second to play as Björkqvist slammed a rebound of a Ryan Tait shot past Larkin to give Providence a dramatic win.
- Providence is now 6-1-2 in their last eight meetings against the RedHawks.
- The Friars swept the RedHawks in a two-game series for the first time in program history.
- Six different Friars scored this weekend – Tait, Printz, Wilkins, Sukumaran, Foley, and Björkqvist.
