PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Merrimack College Warriors, 4-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday, Feb. 27 at PC's Schneider Arena.
PC jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead when Mike Mader's shot from eight feet in front of the net took an awkward bounce over Merrimack goaltender Cris Classen's left pad and into the goal at 5:25.
Merrimack's Sandy Cohen evened the game at 1-1 with a blast from the top of the right circle at 10:15 of the second period. Troy Lake put the Friars up 2-1 when he one-timed a pass from behind the net, which beat Classen high to the blocker side at 16:15 of the second period.
The Warriors forced the second tie of the game when Rejean Stringer beat PC netminder Boyd Ballard with a high wrist shot from the left side at 4:39 of the third. PC's Jon Cameron notched the game winner for the Friars when he picked up a rebound and lifted a backhander by Classen at 15:19 of the third. Fernando Pisani added an empty net goal to seal the win for the Friars at 19:15 of the third.
With the win Providence raised its record to 14-15-3 overall and 8-12-2 in HOCKEY EAST, while Merrimack fell to 9-22-1 overall and 4-18-0 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Merrimack at 7:00 p.m.
