PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) and sophomore Stefan Demopoulos (La Mesa, Calif.) each had career nights for the Friars as they played a role in five Friar goals in Providence's 6-2 victory over Northeastern at Schneider Arena on Friday night. Schaller finished with a goal and four assists, while Demopoulos scored two goals and added three assists.
With the win, the Friars extend their unbeaten streak to six games (2-0-4) and improved their overall record to 12-10-7 (10-6-6 HEA) on the season. Friar freshman goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) made 35 saves to earn the win, while Northeastern netminder Bryan Mountain stopped 28 shots in the meeting as the Huskies fell to 9-17-3 (5-14-3 HEA).
Junior Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) gave the Friars a 1-0 advantage at 8:38 of the first period when he scored his team leading 13th goal of the season. Senior Kyle Murphy (Fairhaven, N.J.) started the play when he won the face-off in the Huskies' defensive zone. Army got possession of the puck and fired a quick shot that beat Mountain five-hole. Demopoulos added to the Friar lead at 14:14 of the period. Schaller connected a pass to freshman Mark Jankowski (Dundas, Ontario) who was set-up behind the Huskies goal. Jankowski then fed a pass to Demopoulos who was wide open just outside the hash marks and sent a backhand shot that fooled Mountain for a 2-0 lead.
At 9:34 of the second period, Josh Manson cut the Friars' lead in half when he beat Gillies up high with a wrist shot from the blue line after a Northeastern odd man rush up the ice. Providence regained the two-goal lead at 11:22 of the period when Jankowski followed up on a play started by his linemates, found a loose puck in the slot and put it into the open net. Demopoulos fired the original shot on goal, adding his second point of the game. Schaller also added an assist on the play, his second of the game.
The back-and-forth action continued as Northeastern once again tightened Providence's lead when Ryan Belonger followed up on a rebound, putting the puck past Gillies at 12:39 of the second. Junior Steven Shamanski (Carberry, Manitoba) put the Friars back up by two goals with his first goal of the season at 12:54. Shamanski skated from the blue line to the slot and fired a slap shot that found the top corner of the Huskies' net. Both Schaller and Demopoulos notched assists on the play.
Providence sealed the win by adding two more goals in the third period. Demopoulos scored his second of the game at 10:50. Jankowski found Schaller, who then skated his way through the Northeastern zone as he attempted a wraparound shot. The initial play by Schaller left the puck loose in the crease and Demopoulos found a way to jam the puck past Mountain for Providence's fifth goal of the game.
Schaller capped off his career night with a power play goal at 14:51 of the frame. Schaller skated in close to Mountain on the man advantage and patiently outwaited the goaltender as he managed to beat Mountain and slid the puck into the net. Army and Demopoulos registered assists on the final goal of the game.
The Friars finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while Northeastern was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
